How often do most students come for lessons?
The best way to learn is to get on a regular lesson and practice schedule. All students at Starfish Studios sign up for a weekly time slot. The two options 30-minute or 60-minute weekly private lessons.
For younger students, the weekly half-hour lessons are available and often work best.
Do I need to own an instrument before I start taking lessons?
Students do not need to own an instrument to start learning, although after a few weeks of lessons they will need to get an instrument to practice with if they are going to advance in a timely manner. Drum students, however, can get by with just a practice pad for several months before needing to purchase a drum set. All of our teachers have great information on rental and purchase options for musical instruments in the Portland area, so your best bet is to sign up for an initial lesson and your teacher will point you in the right direction and answer all of your questions.
What is your cancellation policy?
As long as you call or email your teacher at least 24-hours before the scheduled time slot, you will not be charged for a canceled lesson. However, if you do not give proper advance notice, you will be charged for a no-show.
Is my child too young to start music lessons?
Each child is unique and students as young as 3 years old have enjoyed the experience of our private music lessons. The main focus at Starfish Studios is for learning to be fun so students will build a long-lasting relationship with making music. The earlier students get exposed to a positive musical influence, the better. A trial period of four half-hour lessons is usually a good way to start with students under six-years old.
